Hurricane Impact Testing

For safety reasons, building materials that are subject to high winds, windborne debris and internal/external pressure changes must be tested to determine their performance in these harsh conditions. If materials do not perform as expected, major damage and personal injury may result.
Windows, doors, and curtain walls are particularly affected by these adverse conditions. Quality Testing, Inc. has the expertise to provide a comprehensive range of impact and cycling tests on a wide range of building products. The results help architects, contractors, and owners evaluate the performance of building materials, fenestration products, and curtain wall systems under extreme conditions.

Tested products typically include:

  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Sliding glass doors
  • Store fronts
  • Curtain walls

Quality Testing Inc. utilizes the following impact test standards:

  • ASTM E 1886
  • ASTM E 1996
  • AAMA 506

Cycle test pressures are typically based upon the Design Pressure (or Performance Grade) rating the fenestration product achieved from testing to the AAMA/WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/ A-440 standard.

Quality Testing, Inc designed and built an air cannon which can fire variously sized timbers at specified velocities and impact locations. An air and pressure control panel with reversible blower system are used to test performance under varying pressure differentials.
